Varicose veins arises from a persistent dilatation of the veins, a condition called “varicosity”. When the vein walls are pressed apart, the valves no longer seal appropriately, making it tough for the muscles to push the blood upward. Rather than flowing from one valve to the next, the blood starts to swimming pool in the vein, increasing venous pressure and causing the vein to bulge and twist.
